The guys on wide rows are still there because they can't buy a planter and a corn head at the same time. They trade planters and stay wide because their head is wide. Then they upgrade combine and stay wide because the planter is wide. This goes on for years and most of em have enough money to burn a wet dog so no sympathy from me.

wide heads go for scrap price around here.
at an auction last month. the 6 row wide heads went for $50 each. Farmer I work for bought one for $500 he wanted the JD header trailer it was sitting on. JD all crop head we disassembled the header and kept parts for his 30" all crop they use many of the same parts. |

Down here in the south a lot of guys are still on wide rows because cotton is planted in wide rows and they use the same planter for corn and cotton. Edited by VAfarmboy - 19 Sep 2016 at 10:06pm |

like Dak Dave says....people used to buy them for scrap prices, now they bring a little bit more (not much more) cuz they dismantle them for parts. I've bought Gleaner and IH heads that way for that reason! usually buy one whole corn head for the price of one gathering chain.

if you are thinking of changing row width, and money is tight, start early and buy a planter, don't hafta use it right away....but it'll be there when you are ready to switch. then when you are ready, buy the corn head to fit what-ever planter spacing you bought! can spread it out over a few years time if needed. and it'll give you a chance time wise to go thru it if repairs are needed. if plans change, can always re-sale it. I bought a cheap good Oliver 6-30 planter first, but was able to use it right away planting beans with it. then watching the auctions thru the next few years was able to buy a corn head to fit my combine at the price I wanted to pay or could afford! then the next year I was set! that Oliver planter was a really good planter, several of my farmer friends always wanted to use it too! (some did get to use it).

Gleaner: the properly engineered and built combine.
If you need parts for your Gleaner, we are parting out A's through L2's, so we may be able to help. |

GM....just a tool bar, e-longated 1/4 turn beam, a gauge wheel on each side, markers on each side, painted Oliver green! ac units will fit on it with just longer mount bolts! not bent or sprung. hafta look to see if I still have the planter units or not, I do have a few brand new planter parts that I never installed on the planter units.
