Went and looked at a set of tire chains today for my tractor at a consignment auction this Saturday. Could someone measure their chains so I know how long they will have to be? Luke

Rough way to measure would be chalk a circle on sidewall maybe a little larger than the half way mark from rim to tread then work a tape measure around the circle.They would need to be a little longer than that to account for connecting.If too long you can always shorten.Tie up loose links on inside(next to fender) with several wraps of bailing wire apiece.

i've never put chains on before, but i'm assuming a crude, ballpark measurment would be to measure the diameter of the tire and multiply by 3.  measure the width of the tire and add a few inches....maybe 6".  again, i have no experience with chains, but if i had to know right away, that's what i would do.....unless of course someone that knows tells me otherwise.
or, call a tire chain place and get the chain specs for your tire

P = 3.1416  So if you have a 24" rim the length of the side chain would be about 1/2 width of the tire out from rim or say 28" 
 so 32 X 3.1416 = 100"
remember 4" on each side of center of circles is added from rim
this is figuring side wall is 8" high 
Now cross chains would need to be width of tire face + 8" (4" each side)
so say 13" + 8" =21" length.
We find the length of the circumference of a circle using the formula:
C = 2 πr

We take the radius, multiply it by pi, and multiply by 2.

Well...if I'd seen this post earlier I could've measured mine cause I drug them out of the barn this eve and put em on the 45 cause we got ICE out the butt with a little snow for good measure.I ain't taking them off to lay out and measure.Left over snow is glazed down with enough ice I can drive the tractor over the old drifts and barely sink in.Rain sleet and freezing rain for 2 days really made a statement.
