Been getting a few hours in here and there on my HD5G track loader steering clutch project, but I think that for each hour that I put into it, I find 2 more hours worth of stuff that needs attention. Maybe I am to maticulous, but I think that in the long run, it'll pay off. I am replacing all of the rusted needle bearings in all of the pivot points of the steering clutch levers, the intermediate steering clutch shafts, brake pedals, and transmission clutch lever with bronze bushings, and Making them all greaseable. All of the yokes on the ends of the clutch rods and brake rods are getting removed, and the threads cleaned up so the jamb nuts and yokes spin on by hand. This should be worth while when we go to do the adjusting of them. All in all, I think we are coming in on the home stretch. If I don't quit finding issues, I think my son may beat me. Sad part is, we are, for now, only addressing steering clutches and brakes. Down the road, we are going to tackle the loader part of it. That is going to require all new hydraulic hoses, and some (probably most) of the pins, bushings, and grease zerks are going to have to get some attention. I think we will build a grapple fork for it, too, so we can put round bales out with it occasionally, and grab a little bigger bites of manure when using it to clean out corrals. Maybe, hopefully, waaaaaay down the road, we may even throw a little paint at it. Sure glad I am not having to pay someone shop rates of 100 plus dollars per hour to tackle this project! Later, Darrel

I know sometimes it feels like it will never get finished - I have had moments like that before. Sometimes life gets in the way too, but you just keep working at it here and there whenever you get a chance. Every little bit helps. At least you have the right attitude: I will fix this since I already have it torn down. I hate having to take things apart again down the road after I already did some work in that area.
The worst thing you can do is give yourself a deadline for completion - that just adds more stress to your life and can also lead to cutting corners. Everyone asks me when I will be finishing my tractor restoration, I just say "When it is all back together and requires no more work". Good luck! I've never worked on a dozer before, but I am sure they are much more work than a tractor! |

Seems I got a little worried about all those things when I first got my HD5G back in 1972 - then as I fixed the things that needed to be done - well I found many of the cosmetic things did nothing as some of those adjustments have never been touched .
After 2 paint jobs over the years - well the transmission bearing at the back of transmission has been replaced twice - bearings on ring gear replaced on both sides , one set of HD11 steering clutch plates - 2 sets of brake bands - 2 master clutches - now running a ceramic friction plate - new seal on input of transmission - new bearings in the box - new brass sleeve in clutch - and 2 engine rebuilds- 1 repaired head because of burnt seat and crack by injector tubes - 1 set of new tracks and welded up grouse bars on pads - but over that time about 4,000 hours of work the machine still works . first time in engine replace oil pump and rod and main bearings - injectors (HV7) and about it . Next time new pistons and liners (T pistons and ports) head and valves - water pump, ground crank - new bearings, faced flywheel , new starter, alternator - seems most problems have been solved with a machine that is 60 years old .
