The pictures below are taken from Gary Yaeger face book site:
![]() This is a Holt steam traction engine pulling a Holt Combined Harvester that cuts a 50 ft. swath of grain. Not too bad for circa 1910?
![]() This is a Kevin Small photo of the 36hp Rumely (I know it says 40-140) hitched to the 20-bottom plow at Willis Abel's show at Finnleyville, PA, some years ago. The engine lives in North Carolina now.

I really like old steam engines. Was reading in a magazine the other day, about a certain style of plowing with steam engines.
They would set up an engine at opposite ends of the field, with great big huge gear driven pulleys underneath them, and pull a cable across back and forth with at least a 5-6 bottom plow on the cable.
Looked really, really cool!! Never seen anything like it before! They said the cable would wear out after about 200-400 acres and had to be replaced.

WOW, Thanks!!
Couple things I noticed...
1). Looks like a ROUGH ride on the plow, can you imagine 40 acres??
2). What would happen if one steam engine was off by 4 feet? CROOKED plowing!! haha
3). What would happen if the plow didn't stop at the end, it would winch that plow right on the steam engine!! LOL

Maybe another steam engine the conventional way, or horse and plow.
I just watched that again, the engineering involved in all this is astounding. I cannot imagine the hours involved with the steam engines, or even the plow set up for that matter. Things are alot different today.

The reason for cable plowing was boggs were too wet to drive an engine through without burying it. The cable kept the engine out of the wet stuff.
Guess I coulda read the blog before I posted this ![]() Edited by CTuckerNWIL - 05 Jul 2012 at 10:37pm |

Was an article in Farm Collector magazine a few months ago about steam plowing this way. Figured I would never be able to see it actually happen as article was so interesting, and units were "across the pond".
Thanks so much for providing the video. It is fantastic.
