I'm working on a black belly 7000 that the transmission output/pinion bearing went out on. It locked the tractor up so it wouldn't roll, but then it freed up and we could roll it into the shop. I opened it up, and it is definitely that bearing. My ? now is what's the best way to get to it? Can I just remove the differential and pull the shaft out the back..or am I gonna have to split the tractor ahead of the transmission and disassemble the transmission itself to get the output shaft out? I'm thinkin' that I'm gonna have to split it. Probably ought to buy a manual, but this is quicker. Thanks, -Wes

Yes, it will have to be split to gain access to the snap ring that holds all the gears on the pinion shaft, so it can be pressed rearward to remove. While you're at it, you probably need to reseal the dual-speed PTO? and replace the lift arm shaft seals? to prevent the oil leaks that caused the oil to be low and the ultimate failure of the pinion brgs....of course, checking the oil once in a while might have saved it as well??

Dang! you're right..the pto seal is/was leaking. The lift arms don't seem to be leaking. Thought we kept a good eye on it, but I guess we slipped up... I need to re-seal the spool valve assembly also...I think they're leaking out the spool instead of between the stack, but while I'm there I'll probably check that out too. -Wes

I would replace the PTO shaft seal that is between the transmission and the rear end also while you have it apart. Chances are that shaft will get pulled out when you take the 3pt housing off, and then you risk having a bad seal in there, and plus, you are going deep into the transmission already, what is one more seal going to be at this point for the extra assurance.
