I'm looking to buy a 1971 6G SN 23442. I have to travel a bit in order to even see this unit, and the seller doesn't know if it has wet or dry master and steering clutches. Does any one know if the wet clutches were standard equipment after a certain date, or all the "G" models? I know that "E"'s after SN 14474 had wet clutches, but I hate to assume that all "G"'s had them. Thanks a lot,

All HD6G's have dry steering clutches, only the HD7G's & GB's had wet steering clutches as standard. I'm not sure about the master clutch though, all of the 6000 powered G's that I've seen (which isn't a lot) had a wet master clutch.

I dismantled 6 HD6G and the was dry master cluch and dry stering cluch but I know some HD6G too have some wet too you just need to check by the inspection cover plate

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll find out when I get to see the machine. My thoughts are that the wet clutch is more reliable and requires less maintenance (i.e., adjusting, replacing, etc.) than the dry clutch; as long as you have good, clean oil and screens and filters, the wet set up is better. Is that just my opinion or pretty much a consensus? My 1946 cat had a wet clutch and it worked flawlessly for a decade. Thanks again

Yes the wet master cluch and stering cluch are better and 1971 must be wet one.
