I have a gleaner z 226 in my d 17. Has anyone ever ran the mechanical fuel pump on this motor in pulling?

There's no need to do that. Some Antique Clubs wouldn't allow it. Suit yourself.

Gravity flow is plenty, the pump is just more parasitic drag... and one more part to fail....

Just get rid of the sediment bowl and run street elbows in1/4 pipe to a shut off then a filter and drilled out 1/8" pipe into the carb and open up the needle and seat if you already haven't and that should be more then enough file flow.
