I've got a little Homesteader 8 with a very tired engine. Uses about as much oil as gas!!  Are these little B&S engines worth rebuilding or should I look for a replacement?  Are rebuild kits available?

My B-1 is twice the tractor, but I would like to get this little unit useable again.

Some of these engines had a cast iron cylinder sleeve. Even the aluminum bore engines can be rebuilt but its harder to find someone to do the machining. I had one with a cast-sleeve and tore it down for a rebuild. I bought an oversized piston and undersized rod. The crank was turned and the cylinder bored. I have not yet reassembled it. I believe there are aftermarket kits on eBay but NOS briggs parts show up fairly often too at reasonable prices. You could also watch for an 8hp shortblock. I bought one for $100 from a local shop (got a great deal). Often times a shortblock can be had on ebay for under $200. I don't think you can rebuild one for less than that.  Post your model and type # and I'll get you the correct shortblock #. Then you can watch for it on eBay.

Hi Phil.

That type number isn't listed in my short block manual.  I also have a Simplicity engine reference manual which lists model and type numers for each peice of Simplicity equipment back to 1957.  I looked up the comparable 8hp Simplicity from 1971 and came up with these #s:

 Model          Type
191701      0630-01

Or a 1972 8hp Simplicity was:

191700      0638-01

The short block for these engines would be part # 390649. I bought a 397816 because it had the same crankshaft dimensions but also had a cast-iron sleeve. If your engine is original to the tractor I believe either of these short blocks would work. Add these numbers to your saved searches on ebay and when one comes up they will email you.
