December 2013 Allis Connection calendar photo includes a 1985 AC 8050 powering a 7800 Highine Bale Processor which is holding a large round bale (in preparation for processing) and appears to be blowing a just processed bale into the open side of a livestock shed. Since Dad retired in 1968 I have not been around much farming/ranching, so would appreciate an update on bale processors and similar ranching equipment. Herb(GA)

I run a very similar setup but the processor is a Highline 7000HDR. The fella is probably shredding straw and blowing it into the cattle shed for bedding. My processor will shoot the straw with the deflector up about 80feet easy. If you put the deflector down it makes a nice windrow out of the hay that makes the cattle not trample as much. Can you post a pic or a link to the pic ?

There are many companies making bale processors. Some hold 1 bale, some 2 bales. Some have lifting forks at the rear so that the farmer can back up to a bale and lift it in to the processor. Many guys around here will head out to the winter pasture with 3 bales: 1 in the processor, 1 on the forks on the rear of the processor and 1 on the loader forks of the tractor. Mean less trips back and forth! Some processors can hold 2 bales in the chamber at once.
A neighbour has a processor that he uses to feed poor quality hay bales to beef cattle. If the quality isn't too bad, he can grind up a bale and leave it in a windrow. If the quality is very poor, he will grind 1 good bale and 1 bad bale together.
Some of the models also have a small grain tank that can auger out chop/minerals/etc into the hay windrow at the same time if needed.
