Just purchased a wd45d ring and pinion and planning on doin the install in my gasser fairly soon before next pull. Is there any unexpected surprises while doing this? I haven't been in the rearend before, but i have read a little on it.

this is a site that will tell you more then you
want to know lol but the most importing thing
for me is backlash and contact pattern if that right
i have a good feeling it will work if you do a few it
just get easier to get backlash and contact pattern

The shims that were originaly used should be in proper position if memory serves correct, should get you close to proper factory backlash settings, that said, be sure your close to specs posted in manual. Good Luck CP

I used to do final inspection on gears for CAT. We would roll the ring and pinion as a set and etch the shims used on the back of the gear. IF all transmission housings were machined to the proper tolerance, the backlash would be within specs and the roll pattern should be good. I can only assume Allis had the same type of quality control or they would be there all day shimming and patterning on the assembly line.
SO shims would be important, the one with the gears in the parts tractor, not what was in yours originally.
