Guys:  Looking to freshen up the oil in the final drives.  I got the plugs free assuming they should be full up to the plug level.

Anyone have a good recommendation for the lube for the final drives?

Appreciate any insights... Thank-you Orangeman

I would use 80-90 wt gear oil. HTH Tracy Martin

the 90# or 85/120  gear lube - If you never had the lower case open it might not be a bad idea to check IF any debris is settled into lower part of case.

Orangeman, I am brand new to this forum but have done a little snooping around before joining and see that you have a lot of good posts regarding your 1961 H3 dozer.  I just recently purchased a similar dozer and haven't even been able to haul it home yet.  I have ZERO knowledge about dozers and do not consider myself a "mechanic" but I am looking forward to learning while I try to get a few small projects done.  I did find an Operators Manual (TM-268) that applies to the H3, and calls for SAE 20-20W oil in the final drives.  Since it looks like you might be going with the gear oil, I am wondering if the manual is wrong or why folks are recommending the gear oil.  What did you end up using and how is it working?

The owners manual for my HD6G says 50 wt motor oil in summer and 30 wt in winter. I have been using universal transmission/hydraulic oil. Most people on this forum use 90 wt or 85W140 GL5 oil. If your final drives leak I can understand that the heavier viscosity oil might leak out slower. I owned an HD7 where the previous owner used wheel bearing greese. That didn't work as I had to replace the final drive bearings.
