Hello Allis Fans.
 
I'm new here, I was just advised by some guys over on the IH website RPF that there may be someone who could help me with a friend's HD5 here.
 
I'm just going to paste my post from that site, hopefully, someone can help me out...

I'm a tech for a Cat dealer and have good general knowledge of working on construction equipment, I have an idea of the correct installation procedures, but could use some specifics if someone over here has them.

A friend of mine just picked up a couple of Allis Chalmers HD5's, one a dozer the other a loader. The dozer snapped the left axle off between the roller frame support bearing and sprocket. I pulled it apart a couple weeks ago and he has found all the parts needed to put it back together. Problem is, he has no service manual & I haven't been able to Google any sort of service info on these final drives. So I don't know what kind of pre-load is needed on the bearings and also need to find out if the sprocket requires being pressed on like a Cat.

 My plan with this project, without proper service instructions - I'm going to use the specs from a D3B Cat, change the numbers around a bit by the sizes of the components and hope for the best. 

 

If anyone can give me some more specific knowledge, I'd be most gratefull.

Sprocket sets on live axle and is held onto splines by nut which requires about 1200 ft lbs to tighten .
 Have copy of HD5 manual (single sheet 200 pages copy) which can post to you for $$. 

Removal of truck frame is required

Thank you for the info. 1200 Ft Lbs on the sprocket nut, no press tooling required? As to the bearing pre load, I figured I'd pull the cover down with 4 bolts to about 20 Ft Lbs, measure the gap and shim accordingly.

that sounds right with then shimming. I think they wanted no preload on the bearings but will try to find my book and confirm. when you are installing the sprocket, I tighten the nut then take a sledge and hit the sprocket around the nut and retighten. I do this several times until when I hit the sprocket, it has a solid sound. the taper holds the sprocket and must be tight.

My 10 ft length of pipe on my 48" pipe wrench and my weight at precise place on pipe gives me the torque rate.
