There is a group of people putting on some lawn mower tug o war type pulls and I got several mower sitting around and am thinking about putting one together and giving it a try. simple rules, 1000 pounds max, 16 inch hitch hight, wheelie bars, no bigger than 26 inch tires. what would be the best tire to use on pavement or concrete, any other suggestions, thanks.

We're using Carisle turf saver & multi-track tires when pulling garden tractors on blacktop and pressures vary on temperature and weight. 15#'s is a starting point. We will have to have one of these at our show and pulls sometime.

We're not allowed to run slicks. Only lawn tires. These tug pulls could use different class for 23" tires, as a 23" tire can't compete with a 26'' one! In pulling stock ones are limited to 23X10:50 X 12 tires on stock 8'' rims, some clubs allow 10 and 12" wide rims. Our club use stock rims and tires as most came with. Other classes use maximum of 26X12X12 tire and rims.

Slicks work best with rubber to rubber contact, drag strips drag the track with tires and lay down rubber then spray with a traction compound like vht. From time to time you get bald spots on the starting line from launch and they have to be fixed. what about adding liquid balast to the rear tires for more weight? So a 26" tire will pull better that a 23" tire.
Is it better to run a wider tire that spreads the weight over a larger foot print or a narrower tire that puts more pressure per square inch?

Hi Bob
Yes we have found (pulling on blacktop) that a wider tire with the widest rim allowed will normally pull more than a narrower tire or the same size tire on installed on a narrower rim. As for dia. the widest 23" dia. tires are only 10.5 " wide. And can't compete with the 26's. The 26's are 12'' wide. They're a few 24"X12X12"'s being made now. So they should work with a lower hp tractor. You want the as much tread laying flat on the surface and enough air in tire so the center doesn't cup inward and not gripping. As in pulling you would have to adjust to what you have and try different air pressures and even brands of tires & tread patterns. Softer tires are a plus also.
Good Luck!
