are the m&w pistons any good? found a set of 4 1/8 bore for cheap

  They ran a taller compression height than others and had a larger dish in them.  That dish is right near 70cc in both the AP46 and AP48 pistons, they just changed the wrist pin height for use with a 4" crank or a 4.5" crank.  The wrist pins are offset close to .100" for a better rod angle.
 
A new ring set is fairley expensive as they take an extra ring but the set is available from Hastings.  I bet you could use a cheaper set of the right size rings and just skip one of the compression rings with no problems...... it's likely better if you did as there's to many rings on them anyway.
 
I put a set of ones from a 4" stroke (WD-WC) engine in a Gleaner E engine (4.5 stroke) , trimmed the tops to pop out of the block and give a quench.  I cut the bowls out to relieve the compression down to a reasonable ratio and cut some valve reliefs in the tops.  Stock cam set at a 105* intake centerline and the engine sure lugs good for what it is.  Quench is important, keeping a piston down in the hole so far isn't the best solution, they give up some torque and are prone to detonation but it's usually all we have to work with in these engines.

If I found a good set of M&W pistons cheap, they would be going into one of my WCs pronto! Of course you will need to find a good set of 4.125" sleeves and pony up for the little bit pricey rings. If these are the WC/WD version you will end up with a 217 cid engine and if they are for the WD45 or some other 226 cid application you will end up with  240 cid. I'm just a sentimental sucker that likes the old school performance builds like you could get from a decent dealer back in the day!! Kip
