Hey guys, new to the forum! I have a few questions on building my 45 motor up a bit and all help would be greatly appreciated! First off, i have pulled my 45 a few times and starting to thinking im going to try and get more serious about it. The only problem i have had with is is i have been running out of power down at the about 3/4 down the track in the 5000# class! I know it is basically stock with the only exception of a 17 governor spring and a little fine tuning! So what i am asking is what kind of pistons (wc, wd, or powercrater) should i run and how far should i go into head work (milling down, bigger valves, porting)? Also who is a good person to talk to about a cam grind? With all this said i have to keep it in "stock rpm" range! thanks

Get ahold of him to far a cam grind? Also i stated in my first post about milling the head, it did not dawn on me until i was in bed that milling the head will not help to bump up cr, but how about a good decking job? I do know of a company that makes custom pistons but that is going a little deeper then my wallet is! Thanks

I pull a WD and was having the same problem. I built the D17 engine with WD pistons, same stock cam, D17 gov. spring. I pulled it at 6000# the other night , it almost choked at 220' but managed to spin out. I was astonished with the power boost. Your WD45 engine is basically the same, just put the WD flat top pistons in. The only head work was a valve grind. I have more power that I can apply in the 3500#, 4000#, 4500#, just spin out, I have learned to use the throttle to add feet. Also put on a set of 16.9x26 tires, it helped but still will spin out if your not watching the tires. The 5000# class is my sweet spot, we almost always get a place in the top three. I am pulling against Super 88 Oliver's bored and stroked, and M Farmalls with near 400 cubic inch engines and we keep them watching close! No more pulling and then sitting on the trailer till it's over, they park the tractor and watch close! LOL!!!!

i have 14.9 on it now but have a set of 16.9 that are going on it as soon as i find a set of 18.4x34 to repalce for the D17! I had an oliver 88 and oliver 70 stomp me this last weekend but the pull was on black top and i did not reverse the tires for a better bit, my bad, live and learn from mistakes tho i guess! My father has been pulling for along time and told me to become a winner you have to learn to lose first!

i was talking tires with a friend lastnight and we both are on different sides of the fence about the subject. He insist that i run the 16.9 arnstrong tires i have but i heard alot of good things a bout the new 23 degree firestones, which i also have a set of those to! The only advantage i see the armstrongs have is the lug is a little shorter from wear where as the firestone are about half lug.

Everyone has an opinion about tires, but in my opinion Firestones are the best. Seems in "farmstock" classes the 151's do great. In the hotter classes the 23* 's are my favorites. I have asked Santa For a set of 15.5x 38 Firestone 23* with 20% tread left for Christmas! Once I find the tires then the rim quest will follow.
