Have a bobcat skid steer. Had the alternator rebuilt. Reinstalled it and then noticed the 2 idiot lites that come on when you turn the key on to start stayed on all the time (when key is off and even when no key inserted). Disconnected the alternator and lites still on. Strange thing is when the alternator is connected and I start the machine the lites go out. I also noticed that when I turn the key to start the lites flicker off and then come back on but once it starts they go out. Any ideas what's going on.

By "disconnect the alternator" I presume you mean that you disconnected all the wires to the alternator. If this is the case, you have a short somewhere. I'm not familiar with how a Bobcat is wired, but I presume the regulator is built into the alternator. If by some slim chance you have an external regulator, you might want to look there.

It sounds like the system is searching for a ground. BUT, the first thing I would do is a draw test on the Battery to make sure that is okay and doesn't have a cell going away in it. A sulfating Battery will cause' a lot of goofy things to appear on the dash and happen in the system. If the Battery passes the draw test, the next thing to do is inspect both cables and their connections. Especially on the ground side. Pull the jacket back on the cable to see if you see any corrosion. Renew if corrosion is present. If the Battery doesn't pass the draw test, there's probably yer' culprit....
