i have replaced my regulater  bout 5 times since 12/05 when i bought it. i dont kno why it goes bad so often the first 2 i got  from my dealer was bout 20$ and the next 3 was bout twice as much. it starts by over charging the batteries until i can smell the acid. then i took the top off and adjusted the bolt a little bit and it wont charge long enough to keep the batteries charged up. the alt was rebuilt and is good. is there anything else that will make this go bad???

Same problem a few years ago. New regulators made alternator run full charge all the time. Took cover off the new regulators and internals appeared to be "solid state". Auto parts store was able to find me an old style regulator with the internals just like the old one. Put it on and alternator has charged normally ever since. Good luck.

I put little matchbock size regulators that piggy back right on the back of an original altenator and makes them one wire hookups, got them at auto store. Not original but ends regulator problems.

Cheap electronic regs are just that, cheap.
For the last 20 years when a vibrating reg goes out, and point filing doesn't make it go any more, I replace it with an autolite (ford) electronic regulatore and make a wire harness adapter to match. They work great. 'cept like I said when you use a cheap cork gasketed one. and should isolate from vibrations and will last a whole lot longer...
But even those regs are getting harder to get with all them one wire alts being around.
Yea I know that some think delco and autolite shouldn't be mixed...LOL

i would suggest you closely inspect wiring from alt. to reg. especially where it is routed behind oil filter and and areas like that. look for wiring that has insulation worn thru and causing a ground.  i have a horror story about this when i worked at a dealership years ago. hope this helps

Nice thing about the little regulator that piggy backs on your original alternator is you don't lose your tach drive.

Transpo part no d7014 for the piggy back  voltage regulator.   take out top bolt that hold your alternator together and put through regulator, unplug wires from tractor just need the big hot wire and plug in this little unit. I use it on a 190 running a 385 planter and has worked well.

Try running a ground wire from the regulator to somthing other than the hood.
