| Does anyone have a way to get the bottom pins out of the brakes on a WD 45. Mine are frozen and I have heated them and haven't had any luck getting them loose. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Ron |

I used the brake pin puller in the picture, and kept steady pressure on it, and hammered on the pin in the hole in the bottom of the casting, and eventually, it came loose. |

| If you crank down on the pin too hard with this puller, it WILL pull the head right off the brake pin , so be very pationet, |

| You can also cut head of pin off with tourch then cut about 1/2 " of the pin off working through mouse access hole in bottom of axle housing -- then drive pin in 1/2" and cut again untill pin is gone. the end that is in the diff housing will come out with vice-grips. Do this job OUTSIDE as there will be much smoke from burning mouse nests, also wear FULL leathers so you don't get burnt!! |

By the time that I got my hands on the family WD, it had been so long since Dad had done the brakes that he couldn't remember doing them. But, after he passed on, I found his homemade puller.

If you do end up going through the bottom to cut the pin off, be careful not to cut into the brake shoe hangers. Dont ask me how I know that.
One other thing, I know there is at least one company now that has new pins in stainless steel. Of course they are more expensive, but might be worth it.

I have to this job on my WD45 this summer. I have been lurking in the back ground on every post about this subject. It seems as though the pins are seized in the housings mostly at the outer ends. Once you get the outer area freed up the remaining problems are with corrosion buildup on the shaft making it difficult, but easier to get the shaft through the brake shoe holders. I have been giving the pins on mine a shot of every penetrant listed on this site and known to man every time I take the tractor out to mow. I was wondering how much it would help to warm the housing at the outer end of the pin, chill the pin down by spraying a can freon onto the head of the pin while shielding the still warmed housing, spraying some penetrant on the area, and then start working the pin out? ------------- Dave |

| I'd imagine your heat/cool theory works better on paper that in real life.I'd keep dousing it with 50/50 actone-atf especially from inside the hole.Have had very good results with that stuff. |

Well at least we know that spraying one kind of penetrant on top of another doesn't cause an explosion be cause that's what I've been doing.

Steve, the heat cool theory does work but may be hard to do with that small of a pin. It sure can't hurt to try it though. | Heat the pin up in the mouse hole. Get a saw with skinny blades that can fit in there and cut a chunk out. Cuts much faster if u get in nice and red. |
