i bought a wd45 2 years ago. been just doin light work with her round the farm. today i put her to work. pulled a 8 foot cultipacker through 10 acers. ive got several leaks that ive known about since i bought her. but today i noticed the smell of gear oil will workin in the field. when i finished, i looked on the underneath side of the rear diff and noticed there are two holes aproximately 1 1/2- 2in in diameter. gear oil seemed to be dripping from there. can anyone tell mee what these holes are for and if there should be any kind of cover on them. i cant make any sence of it. there are no threads for a plug of any sort. also ive got a pretty bad leak of hydralic oil at where the belt pulley would be. is it difficult to replace tha seal, or do you just pop that cove off , remove and install the new seal? lol also i was curious if the steering gear housing on a close front tractor, is suposed to just have grease in it or sould it have gear oil? im assuming just grease because of the zert fitting on the front of the cast housing. im a young guy and love all old tractors and trucks, and equipment. just trying to learn everything i can about these old tractors, so the can last another 60 years. So any help or tips would be greatly appriciated. thanks guys

Those holes are under brake drums. No plugs. Inboard of drums are axle seals on brg hsg which carry differential.Got to pull final and axle hsg as one unit off differential hsg to replace.Got to remove brake shoes first. Can be a real obstacle there!LOL  Think there is a cork ring inside that plug to seal absent pulley.Pop off and replace.Front holds 80-90 gear oil as full as the bottom of worm shaft cause more leaks out. Zerk lubes splindle shaft not gears.

A lot of old tractors have grease in the pedestal cause the seals go bad and gear oil leaks out.
