| work happened today. I successfully [I think] installed the liner, piston and rings, rod and bearings, oil pump and strainer and the dreaded oil pan gasket. My son helped me. Everything went slow and methodical and well until I heard the snap. The first oil pan bolt Ian was performing the final torque wrench on snapped. I was sick! Come to find out the wrench only went down to 30, so I unscrewed it a little more but it didn't release and he snapped the bolt. Ended up 3 hours later we drilled through the broken bolt and for now I have a grade 8 quarter inch bolt with lock washer and nut. We are now waiting on the head to get done. I had the exhaust manifold planed Sat. Maybe some day I can work with her? |

Sounds like you did OK today. It won't be long now and all the other "girls" will be pouting because you never take them out anymore

Be careful, if you overtighten the pan bolts, it will bend the lip of the pan and cause it to not seal properly on the gasket. As well if it's a cork gasket, it can crush it too much. I seem to recall the torque for those bolts being around 10 of 15 ft-lbs. Also, as you get into the lower end of a torque wrench, they tend not to be very accurate. | Torque wrench on an oil pan? Never used such a thing, just 3/8 ratchet and snug with one hand. Only need 6-8 ft/lb. |

| Yeah never used a torque wrench on the pan bolts, 3/8 ratchet is plenty enough. Further more i have never seen a cork gasket for a 301 engine. Always put a dab of silicone where the timing cover and block met on the pan gasket and at the back where the pan gasket and rubber quad ring on the adapter plate met, never had one leak to my knowledge. | Yeah guys the book said 20 lbs. I know a torque wrench isn't necessary but the boy learned a lesson. One small extra push led to hours of BS. He will not forget! |
