I just bought a 1930 U, serial number 2302. At an auction in KS. Pretty straight old tractor. Wrong mag and carb but the PO has the carb. I just need to find a mag.

Nice find. was that one originally on steel? 1930 was right about the time A-C started experimenting with rubber tires. I believe the 1932 tractors had it as standard equipment on the U. Does your tractor have the road gear locked out? what a find!!!
Great to see an older A-C on the forum for a change. Hope you enjoy it and thanks for sharing.

Oldorange. It doesn't have 4th locked out so it is an orignal rubber tired U

There are conflicting reports of when the rubber tired machines were available to the public. The fourth gear was always there I guess, just usually locked out on the steel wheelers. That is a fine find. That would make yours one of the earliest rubber tired machines I have ever seen assuming that its original I am curious as to whether or not fourth gear was even in the earliest U's .Oh well, what a neat tractor. I love it!!

they all had the forth gear in them . if it was on steel the forth fork was turn so it wouldn't go in to gear but if you took the cover off and install the fork you had forth. Mine is and early 29 United s/n 83 it was on cut downs when we bought it with forth gear engage( it was an bit sketchy in forth). It looks like an nice factory round spoke wheels. I have bought several of them here in Ontario over the years ,one on steel and the rest on cut down steel. I would like to find an an nice set of round spoke wheels for one of mine. Real nice find. Thanks for posting chuck

Maybe this one was an original steel wheeled tractor. I was just going by what the original owners grandson was telling me. He thought that it was bought new on rubber. But then again, he wasn't alive at the time. How hard are the steel wheels to find for these early U's? I would like to keep these wheels but would like to set it over on steel

Also, what would be the correct magneto for this tractor? Anyone have an extra laying around?

Judging by the pics I can find It looks like an Eisemann gl4 would be the correct magneto. It was also used on the 25-40 at about the same time period. I believe your tractor probably was on steel originally. It looks like the rubber did not get available to the public until the during the production of the 32's. I have a UC thats a 31, and it has the same fate, someone had switched her over to spokes with rubber. I may be wrong on the mag but it is what all the old pics i can find appear to have in my opinion. Still, what a great find you should be proud. If its ever for sale, let me know!!

Great find. I am always wondering about the proper mag too. I assume they were the same for both the U and UC for whatever time period?

Jeff, You made me go to the parts manual on this one!!!! Great save. Manual just goes back to 31, but does list cont. engine. It shows only steel wheels available for cont. u. It list mag as eisemann and looking at the picture of it I would say oldorangeiron is dead on. As usual I have part of one, meaning no magnet and the springs holding the points are rusted into. I got it with one of the 20-35's so would assume it is counterclock wise mag. Didn't like getting it like that but it is a start. Good luck and might see you at pawnee if it rains enough. Lee

The correct mag is an Eisemann GV4; clockwise rotation. I have a freshly rebuilt one on the shelf but unfortunately it is spoken for for a '30 I sold to a local fellow. Rudy Adrian at Adrian's Magneto should be able to provide you with the correct mag. I'll look up his contact number and post it.
Phone no. is: 204 326-6497 e-mail: oldiron@mts.net
He is located in Steinbach, Manitoba but has a shipping point in Lancaster Mn. Does excellent work on older mags.

I've got base mount Mag that should fit, though its not right, I was going to use it on my Model M crawler but I found a Bendix Scintilla that is correct for my tractor.

I just might have something like that in the last shelf of goodie's at my dad's yet .
Oldorangeiron ,that would of been a 20-35 you are thinkinh of NOT a 25-40 ..
Nice find Split51.
I do know for sure that I have the Fairbanks (basemount)replacement mag that will work on this tractor ,
Also there are NO 2 of these tractors the same or even very often see one that is 100% the way it came off the showroom floor .

They used 3 different mags when new. An Eisemann G4, Bosch, and Bendix Scintilla. United No. 1975 has the Bosch. Dave.

I do believe the 25-40's also used the eisemann magneto early on too Fred. I could be wrong and have not done this stuff nearly as long as you, but I am able to find a ton of archive photos with early 25-40's ( till about 32) with the eisemann magneto. At that same time, they made some rubber tired 25-40's available with rubber tires from the factory. At that point, it looks like the bosch magneto on most of the pics.

Just for the record, I mean no disrespect Fred. I am learning as I go, i sure don't wanna seem like a know it all. I am always glad to learn, and know I could be wrong, it looks to me like there are Eisemann's on some of them at least.(25-40's)

Fred is right. At this day and age it is hard to find the exact mag that came off of these tractors. I have the Eisemann G4 on my 25-40, but on two other Continental U's I have ,I have Fairbanks Morse. Anything that makes them run right is the last thing to be picked at. Dave.

absolutely agreed. In no way did I mean any harm. I think its great just to see these old ones even saved from scrap, let alone running and all original. Sorry if anyone took me in a salty manner, i did not intend for that.

I have a U sn 3205 and it has factory round spokes. Unfortunatley, it is a parts donor tractor.
My other U sn 5666 is on full steel w/extentions, and has a Bosch mag.
Both tractors were equipped with the Donaldson glass jar air cleaner, yours has the Vortox air cleaner. It was my understanding that the Vortox's were found on late Continental U's, but I may be wrong.
Either way, you have a very nice find. Good luck with it!!!
