When you crank it by hand, can you hear the impulse snap in the mag? Sometimes if the impulse isn't working, they don't start well cranking but will start and run fine with a pull.

Not for sure about a Lucas Mag. A Bosch, Wico , and Fairbanks Morse compensate the needed timing by retarding the spark the necessary amount to allow for crank starting. During that same process, (impulse snap) it then immediately snaps forward under spring pressure to create the needed speed to power the coil and condenser to create a ggod spark when operating correctly. It sounds to me like the Lucas mag is not creating the needed timing compensation to allow it to start at slow turning speed, but it is ok when turned at a higher speed. Explaining why it is ok on the pull start. Either that or the coil in the mag could also be weak, but has enough to go when the spinning speed is fast enough.

I think I would try to find a known good mag to swap out and try it.
