Can you use diesel engine oil in gas engine tractors. Other than price what is the difference?

Diesel oil helps clean your engine, no problem with it in gas engines, its in everything we own.

Most times there is no problem using a oil with a higher specification in a engine that says lower spec. Problem when you go the other way as newer diesles require a special grade .

Have used Shell Rotella oil in just about everything over the years from cars, pickups, trucks, tractors and even my motorcycles.

Use to use Aero-Shell , or Mobile-Aero in bikes also. 10-40 oil seems to be one to avoid as the lubricity of it has been questioned in the past and has lost favor.

Multi-grade the same way it is used in about every vehicle

now.

Many (at least some) diesel oils are also rated for spark engine use SM and SL. They would be fine in a gas tractor. Here's a link to the specs on Mobil 1 oils-------check out their Turbo diesel oil. It's rated for SM and SL service.

The other thing I like about Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel oil is that it is a 5w-40. The 5w makes for quick starting and quick lubrication flow through the engine on start-up (especially important if the engine has sat for a while) and it provides a 40 weight oil when operating temp is reached. If the engine is an old one and a little "loose," that helps too.

I am like Coke. I use rotella in everything I have. If you rub the oil between your fingers, it almost seems that you can feel the difference between it and regular old 10w40 for gas cars. I have had two instances where I had oil filter gasket problems. The rubber o-ring did not get removed when filter was discarded. The car ran all the oil out before I realized what was going on. One other time the oil guage came unscrewed out of the filter base on my WD. Both engines were saved by high quality oil. I feel like the Rotella impregnated the engine parts and hung in there long enough to save the engine by the time I got it shut off.

do you put Rotella in the little hummers like in the wife's toyota? that is one place that I have not done that.

In the 90's when I was on the fuel truck u could look on the barrel and find lettering that said SF/ CD that was sf was for spark engines and cd was for compression,the last letter in each symbol was the test and the higher the letters the more additives to meet the manufactures. Jim

You can use the diesel rated oil in a gas engine, but it's not a good idea to use a weight other than the recommended on engines with variable cam timing. You can create cam timing issues with the wrong oil.

I use the million nile oil Mobile Delvac 15-40. I watch for the spring specials,cost me $1.75 quart this year. I use it in lawn mower ,and everything.

I use JD torque guard engine oil in everything including 2 cycle engines for over 40 years and never had a problem. Bought a 4020(should have bought a D21) new in 1968 and had to use JD oil for warranty coverage. Over 6000 hrs on the 4020 and still going strong. Buy it in 50 gallon barrels for price and use it in all engines.
