I have a 1939 wc that I pull with. And have a opertunity to buy a war time rear end. the 1939 rear is rebuilt with new bearings seals and brakes. can I swap out the center section? and how much weight can I expect to lose?

Center section should be the same and able to be swapped. Dont know on the weight reduction, but it has to be considerably less. If memory serves me correctly the upper drive axle is different on the steel rearend and therefore comes apart slightly different.

I don't think there is much weight difference between the two.  My 1945 with the steel rear weighs the same as my 1937, not exactly, but close.

The only practical reason for swapping a steel rear end into a pulling tractor is that it gives some options for easily welding brackets for tip bars, custom hitches, etc. There is not a significant difference in weight between these "war time" rears and the cast versions. The steel rear still uses cast finals. You can get steel rears to paint up real nice and shiney!! Kip
