I'd like to know if you come up with anything, but from what I know, there really is no rime or reason for the letters.

They *kinda* go in order. The A was one of the first, then came the B, then there was the C. The CA was a modified C. The IB was the Industrial verson on the B. The BO (or is it OB?) was the rare Orchard version of the B.

The D series was later, the numbers got bigger as they got bigger/newer.

The W series started with the WC, which later became the WD, then again into the WD45. WF was the wide front version of the WC. Why it was the W series I don't know.

The U came about bacause it came from the United company which AC bought.

If you read through the AC books, they expalin some of the "prototypes" and there model letters that never made it into production. This might explain some of the gaps in letters, etc...?

Then you got odd balls like the RC, and the G. The G might have a reason, seems to me I read something, but I can't recall it now.

That is the most help I can be.....

I've heard the G called a Grasshopper.

I agree with Murph. I read somewhere that it was unofficially called the grasshopper when they were designing it and the G stuck. I have no idea if that is true or not.

The WC, WD and WD45 were W because the engine is a W series engine.

The RC is a Row Crop C. A cheaper version of the WC with the B/C engine.

I agree that the G is for Gadsden, AL

But why is it a W series engine in the first place?

Isin't a C a row crop tractor as well though? And the WC for that matter?

The Gadsden, AL referance is the one I had heard before, but couldn't remember. The Grasshoper makes sence too though...

How about the old E tractors, anyone heard why they were E's?

And going to the other end of the spectrum, the newest number series tractors, why did AC drop the letters and go to just numbers? Just to simplify things since the letters didn't mean anything anyway? LOL!

Any chance the 'W' came from 'Waukesha' since the first few 1933 'WC' had a Waukesha engine ( and the Model 'B' could have already been in the planning stages ) hence the 'W' and the 'C'.

When AC introduced the WC it was called the W All Crop. They didn't call it the WC until '34. And the WF is a standard WC, not a wide front WC.

I don't know much about the series designations, but the "C" in UC, WC, etc. was derrived from "Cultivator". They obviously abandoned the logic of the letters standing for something as time went on... probably in the late 30's. Will have to read some old brochures and see if I can figure out any more.

As for the "E" tractors, maybe from "Enormous!" :)
