Just picked one up yesterday as a spare - bought tractor last year and have it stored at hunting land so I couldn't verify the size but the implement dealer said it is the right one - it is 1/2" in diameter and 2 1/2" long and ... cost $20.  Is this right?  I remember putting one in last year that the guy had in the tool box but I didn't think is was 1/2" so I thought I should ask here cause if it ain't the right one it's going back.

Memory fails me on the size; it wants to come up with either 1/2" or 7/16". A Grade 2 or Grade 5 bolt (right length) will also suffice as a shear pin.

I use the cheapest bolts I can get and the bolt at the pto shaft hardly ever shears. They only cost about a $1.25 a pound.

The bolt is a special shoulder bolt that is used.  Don't know the size.  Grade 5 or 8. 2 is too soft.

It is a special bolt, as old farmer indicated, it has two dimensions on the shaft portion of the bolt.  All that being said, so many of them are so worn out, that most will take a 1/2" bolt, I wouldn't go over a standard soft bolt (grade2) if using 1/2" or it will lead to other broken parts if it ever needs to shear.  If the holes are worn out, and the thing has been running loose for some time, you may need a grade 5, just to hold since the shearing forces won't be even on both sides.
