My name is Jason and I run a small repair shop out of my farm shop here in OH. Recently, A customer of mine dropped off an AC 170 for repair and service. Its been brought to my attention that he has something somewhat rare, so I thought I would ask a little more about it. Its a 4 speed tractor with no hi-lo, with a shuttle clutch reverser setup. Forgive me if I am a little vague on the details, I am a green/red guy. Anyway, some friends of mine told me this is a pretty rare tractor so I would like to learn more about it.  |

 Put it to work putting a load of corn on my cab over. Seems to run alright.....hard to get on and off of. |

The AC mechanic I go to has one also. As far as being rare, I don't know, but that was the first when I had ever saw or even heard of.

Shuttle clutch on a 170 is rare. Nicest one I have seen .Most are in bad shape. Believe it was a little more common on D-17's. I have seen probably 20 170's with a shuttle clutch. At least 5 in person and the rest either in posts here or photo ads online. In my mind they have all been black stripe tractors and most of them gas engines. Most of the ones I have seen in person did not have a 3pt hitch either. Another oddity of a shuttle tractor is that the PTO spins at like 700 rpms.
The few shuttle D17's I have ever seen were all painted yellow.

I've seen two Shuttle 170's in person. Both had 3pt and dual-speed 540/1000 PTO. Both also were farm tractor orange paint and had loaders. ------------- The innovators offer what others will imitate. |

The shuttle clutch was introduced with the D-14 when AC was trying to get into the industrial loader backhoe business. We sold one D-14 with loader hoe and oneD-14 with loader. Basically Allis Chalmers used the power director clutch arrangement with additional gearing to make them a reverser?. Yes you have FOUR forward and REVERSE speeds. I drove one - carefully - in high reverse in a demonstration. We stopped selling in 1962. I thought the shuttle would be for industrial equipment only. Am somewhat surprised to see it on an agricultural unit. come to think it would have use on some farm operations. Good Luck! Bill Long |

We have a 170 gas shuttle and a 175 gas shuttle. The 170 gas shuttle we have does not have a 3 point and the 175 does have a 3 point. Our 170 gas was used to run a hay rake and the 175 shuttle had a loader on it. Yes they have the same speed in forward and reverse. Very fun to drive and would make a handy loader tractor.

The front axle needs a severe amount of work. The cylinder leaks, tie rods are worn out, and the pivot pin bushing is MIA. Someone has had a loader on the tractor and plain beat the piss out of the front axle. The spindles are welded to the steering arms. The hubs are stripped out, someone has put bolts thru the hubs and is holding the wheels (which have also had new centers welded in) on with nuts. There ought to be an aptitude test to own machinery or a welder. I assume by Big Al you are referring to ACs foray into Class 8 truck engines, but it is not. It has a very healthy CAT under the hood, and it loves its CAT Food too. I must confess, the only AC product I have ever had a desire to own was an F2 combine with the 4 cylinder diesel and a hydro. Perhaps in a few years I can buy my boy one. I've always liked the looks of them, but I doubt I want to trade my 9600 on one anytime soon ;) |

Jason, my neighbors had an I600 industrial loader tractor with the shuttle clutch in it. It was a tough, heavy old tractor, basically a D-15 industrial. It had loaded rear tires, a 55 gallon drum of cement on the three point(with homebuilt cradle under it), and two pair of wheel weights on each side. That shuttle was awesome for loader work, especially for one of that era. Never seen one in person on a 170/175 either.

Mile fuelage lol. Relatively short hops,, 60- 120 miles a trip. Average about 4.5, less in winter. Nick, Poiint the dodge south and you can even drive one. I am disappointed that you and the wife didn't make it down here to Louisville. |
