The guy I work for is looking at an IH 766 German diesel. It has 4900 hrs. excellent condition. What do you guys think of these tractors and what do you think they are worth.

If it actually has a  310 German, unless transplanted, it has to be a late 706, or 756.
All 766ds came with the new at the time 360 cu. in. ,"Melrose Park", wet sleeved engine.

around here, any of the IH's of those models ie: 706,806,1206,756,etc,etc are usually good machines and parts are easy to come by.  Not many problems around here with the engines

If they are specifying german, then it may be a 756. lots of people mix up the numbers. All 766 use the D360, looks just like a D414/436 but a few inches shorter. nice little 80hp tractors regardless which it actually is.

Early 706 tractors with the 282 left a lot to be desired in my opinion.  Got one in the shop now that had antifreeze in the oil, luckily it was only the head gasket, as the head checked out OK.  They are notorious for cracked heads and this one has had 3 heads put on it in its lifetime.  Newer IH engines prooved to be much better, but I still am not a fan of the transmissions and torque set-up of red tractors compared to a power-director.  Good luck
