I had a neighbor give me a ford 3 pt mower. Im gonna head over and pick it up tommorow. My 3pt snapcoupler conversion only has the two links and the snapcoupler bell hookup. Is the 3rd pt (top) hookup needed for the mower? Ive heard of folks using different setups for the top link?

Yes, you will need a top link. What model tractor do you have?

If the mower has a tail wheel you can get by without a third link. Your hold position has to work very well though. I never hook up the third link on my bush hog mower. If I have to pick up the rear of the mower I use a piece of chain for the third link.

You can easily bend a piece of flat stock in a U and drill thru holes in the ends. Slide the U over your rock shaft and pin the top link to it. If you use John's way, make sure the chain can't slip down to the PTO shaft while in the down position

My 3pt mower has wheels. I don't use the top link either. I have a top link if i need to lift it to put on a trailer. the top link is just a U shape around the liftshaft. if your mower dosent have front wheels connect a limit chane to the lift arms so it won't go all the way down. using the lift to try and hold a position don't work that well. with limit chains you'll get the same cut height every time.

This doesn't relate directly to the question, but John is right about using a chain for a top link on a bush hog. I do the same. When the front of my tractor goes up a rise, the solid top link was causing the flat tension members on the "bush hog" to bend bcause they were compressed. The chain eliminates that. It just droops.

I use a chain on bush hog.If rear wheels go in a low place it doesn,t pick up rear wheels or bend third link
