Helping my neighbor with his 9400 JD combine.  It has a habit of still turning over after the engine starts and by the time he gets shut down and batteries un-hooked his cables are melted off and it keeps trying to crank.  Deere told him that low voltage will cause the starter to stick.  I have never heard of that.  It has 2 solenoids on it from the key.  I guess the one energizes the other to spin the starter.....another one of deere's great idea's.  Anyhow, JD parts sold him a shutoff to wire in, BUT it kills everything but the starter and it keeps on spinning.  The starter was rebuilt and noids were replaced in June before wheat and now time to run beans and does the same thing.  This time it took a starter, noids, alt, battery cables were all junked and replaced.

yes, low voltage(battery) can cause a solenoid or relay to weld(stick) the contacts. I have had Ford cars do this numerous times.

Absolutely correct! Low voltage to components can cause damage in the component causing all kinds of problems, including what you just explained. Unfortunately, the component takes the brunt of the problem, and should be gone though...

One other thing is most starter relays have a diode in them to keep the starter motor from back feeding and energizing the relay and keeping it turning. I've replaced several relays and cured this exact problem on many differant types of equipment.

Stray, he just said tonight they were able to catch it one time bckfeeding voltage out of the starter,
Do you guys think a battery tender on this ting while in the shed might be a good idea??

if i were him, i'd insure it, then have the dealer fix it, then when it catches fire...(and it will) it'll be on the dealer, and what they don't pay, the insurance co will pick up! this is why alot of JD combines burn! now IH has caught onto this and are building them the same way! and now they are burning up! it's esimated that between 600 and 700 combines burn in the usa each year! the factories know this, and what a better way to sell more new combines!!!

Battery tenders are good to keep a battery ready to use on a piece of equipment that isn't used all the time, I use one on my portable welder just plug it in when you park it and forget it tell you hook up to it to go some where. But if the starter motor is back feeding the starter relay the only fix is to replace the relay, the diode in the relay has to have went bad and not stoping the current.

I didn't read theat he put a new key switch. Is it possible that the noids are being told to stay on. When my old Fords have done that a quick smack with a wrench on the solinoid and they stop also have never had anything burn up when this happens. Although it probly shortens the life of starter and I usually plan on replacing solinoid soon.
