As some of you have learned today I have 2 B's
 
my 38 has a smaller carb
 
the 40 has a bigger ball shaped carb says Marvel Scholer and has 16 stamped on it
 
whats the differences????? I know that these were setup to run several types of fuel
 
low octane gasoline
high octane gasoline
distilate
kerosene
 
so any info would be awesome, here are my pics

notice the difference in the manifold one has a petcock in it.

When you get into these Little AC tractors as old as these you never really know what was there when new and what was replaced over time. It was pretty easy to replace or adapt something worn out with something other than a OEM part. Several good vintage B/C dealers parts books come in handy in identifying obsolete parts like wheel rims, clamps and such that had to be replaced with the newer production or aftermarket parts still available. Bs we call Frankin Bs, made up of whatever worked and was available at tractor salvage yards to keep them working are quite plentyfull. Makes restoring a B with only all the absolute correct vintage parts a real challenge. Finding a complete B that has never had a wrench on it is a B restorers dream come true.
   Get a line up of Bs together at one place and take the time to observe all the little things that evolved over the entire production run from 37 to 57.  Then try to figure out at exactly what serial number these visable little changes happened. Don't always count on the Serial Number by the shifter being the age of the whole tractor. All you can count on is that that transmission was from a the year it was stamped. A C tranny is the same as a B and will interchange. A B with a C tranny don't make it a C.

THe first carb is a Zenith. Maybe with an aftermarket manifold. THE second carb is the MS with the vacuum valve screwed into the manifold. I think they were used to power a milking machine on the farm 50 years ago. Both carburetors were original equipement at some time between 1938 and 1958.

THe tag on the second manifold are hard to come by... dont loose that.

The petcock is on the intake manifold. Likely to run a milking machine.(?) In fact it looks like a Surge brass cock.  We all have our own preferences but I think the MS is a better carb. Doesn't seem to plug up as often. My address is Fall Creek as well. We should talk.

the guy i bought the 38 from with the brass valve on it said when he was a kid and the power went out they could run two milk buckets off the valve on a B

The parts books call the petcock a "cock" ,ventilating, manifold. Pictured as used originally on spec plate type manifolds for specific power unit engines. The Standard  CA manifold is pictured in the CA parts book as not having a spec plate with a pipe plug where the cock fits. Most of the China Cast aftermarket manifolds today are patterned after the CA manifold but are not drilled and tapped for a plug or a cock.

So I need to go through the MS carb, need big gasket and float for sure. The float bubbles if you call them are flattened. I assume condensation and it froze and flattened them.

Any idea where to get parts? I'll take a pic of the float when I get home, I'm in my bow stand at the moment. Waiting for a nice 8pointer we had on camera last night, if he comes back it and I get him, it will be 3yrs to the day that I shot a 8 pointer just a fuz smaller about 50yds to the north. Can't wait, wish me luck
