I have a vicon disc mower conditioner with a bad bearing at one of the discs. The hub the disc mounts to is siezed on its drive shaft and needs to be pulled to get to the bearing. Can it be heated with a torch to loosen it or would that cause future problems with the hub or gearshaft? The other hubs came off with a 3 jaw puller and elbow grease but this one is stripping the threads on the puller bolt. Thanks for any assistance. I don't know if heating it will affect the strength of the metal and don't want anything flying out from under the mower.

I'm not a metal expert but it's been my experience that metal can be heated and if allowed to cool on it's own will not change the strength of it.

Keep it from glowing. Try some magic juice like Kroil or half and half acetone/ATF with some heat and shock.

Thanks guys. I had already put ATF/acetone on it when I posted, maybe all night will do the trick. I'll try some moderate heat, too. I am never sure how much heat is too much if the component might have been heat treated . I need to learn more about metals and metalworking. This thing has been an exercise in patience getting it apart. Fortunately I have another mower and an old conditioner and can take my time. It is too wet to make hay anyway.
