What is the best way to replace the release chain from the lever to the bell? My chain has some stretched links and I have tried everything I can think of to get it adjusted to work properly. I can get it to latch, but then the chain is too loose to move the hook enogh to easily release. If I set it to release the hook, the chain is too tight and the hook will let go under load.

It is not fun live testing release latches while plowing.

Thanks for the help,

Robert

I can't help with your question, but I'd suggest adding a safety chain to your plow to prevent a serious injury in case the latch releases again while plowing.

On my 45 the lever is connected to the second link, I would guess it's how someone shortened the chain.

Where is the best place to find this type of release chain? My 45 needs new chain and Orchlein stores don't carry it. Thanks Gary

Murph-NC, I have been giving that some thought, seeing a 3-14 plow rise up behind you will certainly get the heart rate up.

John (C-IL) That is the way I have mine routed.

Gary(MO) I don't know where you are in MO, but I bought some chain that at least looks right at the Family Center in Butler.

Thanks for the help guys; when the snap coupler system is working right, I can hook up my plow without getting off the tractor. My blade isn't quite so easy, but it still beats horsing around on 3 pt implements when you are by yourself.

You might check out the snap bell real close for wear. Any pivot points or the latch itself can wear causing problems like you are having.

Thanks, I'll do that. The snap coupler parts came off of a well worn parts tractor.
I have been thinking about going back to using the pin hitch that Grandpa always used.

That might be the safest thing you could do. There is a replacement spring available somewhere for the latch on the bell also. They can get weak or break and cause a forward force on the back of the seat.
So since this was converted, do you use the latches on the lift arms. The latches are supposed to release if the bell comes unhooked.  This is what happens using bolts or pins on the lift arms with a snap couple bell.

Yes Sir, I use the Lift latches, and mine released the plow when the rear bottom got about four feet out of the ground, I was stomping the clutch, closing the throttle and ducking forward all at the same time.

I don't know why, but Grandpa had a snap coupler plow that he hitched underneath the tractor with what looks to me like a factory flat clevis and pin. He also had lift latches on the lifting arms.

Unfortunately, after Grandpa went to the nursing home, some lowlife stole the lift latches, generator, and dash off the tractor before I retired from the Navy.

I bought a parts tractor because I also needed a manifold, and one rear wheel.

The snap coupler bell was just a bonus. Before I start plowing this fall I will take it apart and inspect everything again.

Robert
