I have a hd16m. It is running hot and after it runs for awhile it will blow white smoke out the stack like crazy when I deaccellerate. If I deaccellerate slow it wont do it as much or not at all.

Any ideas?

It seams to have the same amount of power as it always have.

Demo, you might be getting coolant into the cylinders, White smoke while running is usually an indication of later injection timing, poor injection (low pump pressures/dirty filters) or water, since you are having a overheating problem also I would probably head towards coolant. Tad

I did run the machine out of fuel while operating it on a incline. So its a pertty good chance that the filters are clogged up.

What temp should it run at? Before I used it on this job I think it ran about 180 but thats been about a year ago

I have to claim ignorance on that particular model, so I speak in generalities, if it is turbo charged, maybe turbo seals or low compression will cause white smoke but usually all the time not while decelerating. Is it using coolant or oil?? Running it out of fuel does not correlate to plugged filters, AC's circulate so much fuel continuously that if there was contamination it would have been picked up long before running out even if you were filling out of 50 gallon drums that had been sitting out in the weather, all the crud goes right to the bottom of the tank, right where the fuel pick up is.Was it doing this before it ran out of fuel? Has it been sitting for a long period of time? Tad

It leaks oil, I dont know if its burning any but I havent noticed anything odd other then the white smoke at slow down. Yes the machine has sit for awhile. Probably 4 or 5 months. I had only ran the machine for a couple days before I ran it out of fuel and it didnt do it then.

It dont seam to do it till its up close to 200 degrees.

If it does have a blown head gasket are parts easy to get? It dont appear that it would be very difficult to fix.

And yes the machine is turbo charged.

Since it didn't do it before you ran out of fuel a few things come to mind like cracking the injector lines while running to eliminate the possibility of an air bubble if any and the big thing, what kind of fuel did you refill it with? any water contamination will usually end up in the first(primary) filter unless it has a water separator and then if fills, will move to the next filter down the line, but by doing so restricts the fuel flow (low fuel pressure). Not being a 16 expert by any means, I believe that the fuel goes through the torque converter for cooling as well, but I stand to be corrected on that. Tad

I ran the machine again today. It didnt run nearly as hot but its also about 35 degrees cooler out. It also didnt blow the white smoke either. I did notice that the exhuast manifold has a crack in it. Will the crack mess up the funciton of the turbo?

Demo, exhaust leaks in enough volume will certainly effect turbo performance. I just changed a badly cracked exhaust manifold on my cousin's 6C and he gained a gear. If you can hear the exhaust ticking you are loosing what drives the turbo. As far as the white smoke goes I guess wait and see, it is obviously temp related, keep a close eye on coolant levels, and oil pressure. I have seen some engines blow white smoke when they were hot, but I mean screaming , misfiring hot, I don't think, at least I hope, that isn't your case. Maybe check the fins in the radiator with a good light or move it to use sunlight to see that all is clear and open, I assume it has pusher fan, that works great while moving dirt but in continual use like ripping or disking they don't work as well and can cause and overheating problem. Check your fan belt tension also. Tad

The radiator appears to be clean and clear. That was one of the first things that I checked. I cant hear any odd noises but as loud as the machine is they would have to be pertty bad. And it does have a pusher fan.
