I was looking at a 1964 Allis Chalmer H-3 this week. Im looking to do a bunch of work with it on my property, pond, clear small trees and level the ground on 6 acers. I went and checked out a Allis Chalmers H-3 for $4500 with a really rough trailer. Looking at the dozer I noticed both top roller are really wore and two bottom rollers are shot. I took a dozer literate friend with me and he said the tracks were about 50% and the sprockes are in really good shape. It has the a huge winch on the back but is missing all the controlls. When the owner started the machine up we noticed that some hydralic fluid was leaking out of the hydralic pump from the bottom. My friend climbed under the machine to look at the pump and said he could see were a grinder was used on the aluminum pump housing and then a quarter sizer weld was on the bottom were the fluid was coming out of. It would only leak when the machine moved but not sitting still. When the owner went to move the dozer you could hear the fan hit something but the water pump bearing felt good. My question is how much are new/used rollers and a hydralic pump? Can they even be found? The pump is what really scares me!! What could cause the fan to hit if the water pump bearings are good? Also has anyone figure out how to make the winch operate with the missing valves? Being that I have never been around dozers before I dont want to by a piece of scrap metal for my first machine. Dont try to talk yourself into it, Walk Away! Spend a little more for something better! especially if it is your first machine.

As far as I know the pump should be steel. I cracked mine this winter and the cheapest I found for a used replacement was like 400-500 bucks. i ended up having a new plate made for the pump by a machine shop.

Rollers are out there but they aren't cheap.

Sounds like about a $1200 machine not a $4500 unit.

It's called a money pit waiting for infusion. To high and to much work for that size machine. Better ones out there .. And no matter what the bargain is there is a better one to be found .

Recently looked at an H-3 with 6 way, five roller track, rear rollers shot to the point where you could wiggle them for and aft. Sprocket wore down 50%, new chains and plates,

Bad deflection at idler cross shaft, machine would only doze on high idle. I passed on the machine due to too many defects. It sold two days afterwards and was glad I did not pursue it.

For the listing of things you wish to accomplish, you have a basic decision point to make, do you have more money than time or vice versa. If you have the money I would recommend you buy a machine that does not need much to hop on and go.

Hope these recommendations are of use.

Thanks guy's that what I was thinking. I really need a machine to get some of my things done but dont want a money pit. I really cant find to many machines around my house for sale. I'm trying to find something local so my friend can look at with me so I know Im not getting taken.

I have a H-3 and they are a great little crawler for light jobs. You would be better looking for a HD-4 or the newer version of the HD-4 called a 653. They a great little crawler.

You might want to just hire someone to complete your projects with a larger dozer. I think you will find it cheaper and quicker to be completed, and you will still have enough hands on time of your own before completely finished, MHO.

To much money, for the work it needs. At that price it should be close to perfect. The hydro pump is cast iron not alum.
