I replaced my water pump on the D17D Saturday. Today I drove it a good 30 miles. I noticed the water temp runs a little lower. Before the new pump it was always about half way or slightly more in the green zone. Today was the hottest and longest run and the water temp was definitely in the lower 1/4 of the green. The replacement pump was a completely new and not a reman.

Yep, I used to have a 66 chevy pickup and the pump wasn't working too well. When I pulled it the impeller had about 3/8 inch more clearance than the new one.

Impeller blades sometimes rust.

But the thermostat should control temperature unless the flow is way to small then it should be overheating.

Often a failed pump contributes to a single overheating event as it loose water past the seal from seal or bearing failure and that damages the thermostat. That happened to the thermostat in my dad's car that I was taking west with Mom and camper in 1970. Half a day out, water pump let go. And I'd been driving it more on the thermometer than the speedometer along I-44 near St. Louis. Changed the pump at lunch at Rolla. Next day on level ground in Oklahoma the thermostat started sticking closed. Bought thermostat and gasket at Tulsa, didn't make OK City before it stuck and stayed closed, so I changed the thermostat on the side of the interstate with traffic roaring by. That over heat episode probably contributed to an overheat ring or valve and by the time that trip was over, the car was running on 5 cylinders with a bit of a whoosh on the 6th one. So I'd be considering at least checking the thermostat if not changing it.
