When changing a head gasket is it necessary to send the head off and have it checked for cracks or warps or will a new head gasket usually fix the problem.  If you did have a crack would it be visible to the naked eye.  I had water pumping out around the exhaust manifold on the number three cylinder so I wondered if it could just be the head gasket.  Wasn't too bad because I wasn't loosing a noticeable amount of coolant and there is no evidence of water in the crankcase.

you can check for warpage yourself and look for cracks but a big cause of leaky head gaskets is low liner protrusions. depends on what engine it is whether it is easily repaired or not.

dad: you said low liner protrusion. Does that cause oil in coolant? how do you get liner to correct position? Do you need head gasket replaced to fix? Didn't mean to jack thread, but seem to have similar problems with hd6

low liners do not cause oil in the coolant, they just cause head gasket leaks. the liners need to be several thousandths higher than the block deck so the head and gasket can keep them down and in place so they do not move up and down and cause cracks. the liners need to be shimmed underneath the top ring before they are installed. bad head gasket with low liners means they need to come out, check for cracks and reinstalled with shims. oil in water usually comes from a bad oil cooler leaking pressurized oil into the lower pressurized coolant system. oil will pass through a crack also but not as common. what type of engine? buda or allis?
