I cannot fault anyone for restoring an antique tractor.  Remember, they don't make them any more.  If we don't care for our history it will dissapear.

Molines had a nice color, I remember years ago OAN had an article where an Allis caravan passed a Moline caravan, pretty cool.

 A buddy of mine bought a 1947 ZTU last winter. Being only a AC fan it was interesting to tear into it and get it running again!! The motor was alot different with the "jug" cylinder bores. What I really found weird was the spark plug location. AC talks about the "power crater" which makes sense to me, but the MM had the spark plug not even in the combustion area, it was off to the side!?!?. It was fun to work on and get running. It also had drum brakes just like a car, not the bad AC design. Ryan

Cousin had a MM Diesel in the 70's, don't remember which model but a real horse.

when I was a kid I worked for a guy who had mm's  aZ   a U302 and a G670, I especiallly liked the 302 and would buy it today if the new owner would sell it. Brian S

This ZTU I spoke about earlier also had a hand lever for the clutch and you could either use the seat or swing it out of the way and stand up to drive.

I restored one of those last year and they are interesting. I still have the side mower drive off of it and have been thinking of putting it on ebay.JP

Worked for a soybean seed dealer in late 80s that farmed with MM's that used LP.He had a tractor for each task,that tractor would stay hooked or atatched to that particular piece of equipt.1 on a corn cult,1 on bean cult.,1 on plow, 1on planter.He had about 30 tractors.He did have a few that did multiple jobs,but he thought it was a waste to hook up and un hook equipt.Also each tractor was just large enough to do task at hand.
He used LP because there was not a fuel tax on it at the time.LP can be very efficient in small engines, but the large tractors that did heavy field work gobbled it up.
Rotting soybeans and LP have a certain odor that is distinct and brings back a lot of bad memories
Always liked the MM's,Z's U's G1000 5 star or Jet Star.Hand clutch on smaller models made auger work much easier.Could work hand clutch from behind when connecting PTO's and wagons.OSHA would never let one fly today

I have fond memories of an R.  It was the first tractor I was allowed to drive at about the age of 7 or 8 because it had a hand clutch I could engage and disengage.

A unique thing about that engine (and probably some other MM engines) was that you could replace the rod bearings (and maybe the crank bearings) without dropping the pan or splitting the tractor.

The 1947 ZTU I worked on had roller bearings on the crankshaft.

The MM engine design is surprisingly similar to the STEARNS side-rocker, and the valves resided in a 'pocket' up above the top of the piston... made for a very compact combustion chamber... this got around the pitfalls of flathead engines, and also solved the valve-piston interferance issue.  Unfortunately, the valves were very shrouded, so running 'em fast rapidly found the breathing limitations of the design.

The MM's BIG bonus, that many overlook... is an awesome road-gear...  usually scary-fast.

But regardless of color, ALL old tractors are downright cool.  I'll take one of everything, please!!!

I heard they advertised them to dealers as the only tractor you could work on while sitting on a chair (plugs and head).  I've got a Z and a 670 Super diesel.  Used to run a U when I was a kid.  Would almost fall asleep because the tractor engine ran so slow.  It was fun to drive back to the farm, did better then 30MPH.

I used one (Z)at our local show a few years back to finish pickin corn with my Wood Brothers. It had rained and the ground got too slick for the CA with no fluid or weights. I was concerned about the place you had to rest your feet while using the PTO but the tractor was easy to handle and was kinda fun to play with.

Richard, it must be OK to say you got a MM. on here, they are kinda a neat old horse, My Dad got one to look at, at this point I don't what he was thinking?  but its tired 1955 UBspeical wide front, it needs a lot TLC and parts, and he got it fairly cheap I guess about 100 bushel of ear corn the guy needed the corn more than the tractor, kinda excited to see what becomes of it, Dad is very Orange I think he sleeps on WD hood LOL.
