There should be a little double arrow pointer on the bottom of the shifter shaft that would point to {5 3 R} on the back side and {1 2 4} on the front side. In the neutral position, center of the back-forth travel) you can twist the shifter to select which gear you want to be in, then you go forward or backwards to select the gear that the arrow points to on the respective side.

So this a PD 20 speed transmission? with the foot High/Low, where is the Hand operate Hi/lo?
A 7000 with a 4 on the floor with 3 speed PD is the biggest thing I have driven.

Charlie, the lever next to the T handle has hi, low, and park-basically the T handle has 5 forward and one reverse, the handle next to it has a hi-low and park (not powershift), and there are 2 buttons that look like old time dimmer switches for pd hi-low

I've seen this tractor for sale before so it must have not sold the first time or is being resold. I remember the crappy writing on the dash to indicate the 540PTO RPM from the last time it was up for sale.
