I am working on the 1940 WC ( that my late father bought 1952). I have put (and adjusted) points in the magneto and am getting good spark. I now want to install magneto. I have number one cylinder top dead on compression stroke, but cannot find fire mark in inspection hole in clutch cover!?!?...does one exist, or am I missing something? Thanks in advance...Dan

A hint. The (set) bolt on the front crankshaft pulley will be straight up when the crankshaft is at TDC.

Once you have the mag installed, turn the engine over slowly with the hand crank.  You can be comfortably satisfied that you're in the 'right range' when you turn the handle, feel compression peak, then just START to let off, when you hear the CLACK!
