Ok fellas- here's where I am. I planted einkorn last fall and to my surprise, the deer did not destroy my small 2 acre plot of wheat. It now looks amazing and is headed out, still green but headed out. Question- Grandads 66 Big Bin combine has a pick up head on it. I assume I can use a sickle bar mower to cut the wheat, Rake it, the combine it. The Big Bin last combine Oats some 7 years ago. Do I need special screens for the combine or is there an adjustment for the smaller wheat grain? Yes I'm a newbie to the all crop, but willing to learn! If you have (or can find) a manual for the combine, it will have answers for many of your questions, along with suggested starting settings. ------------- If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere. Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |

I imagine the oat screen will be about right for Einkorn. Close enough to not make much of a difference, anyway (a slightly different screen size might, for instance, result in 2% better recovery or a 2% cleaner sample, but nothing that I think you'll care about). But check any thresher, old combine, of fanning mill manual to see what the difference is in recommended screen sizes between the two crops to know for sure. I think more significantly: If you're cutting with a sickle mower and swathing with a rake, you'll run a decent risk of shattering a lot of grain with the rake. Raking early with the dew on will help a lot. If you have or can borrow a rotary rake instead of a rolabar or wheel rake, it will be even better. It definitely can and had been done (I've done it), but you have to be a little careful swathing with a rake, and there will be a little shatter that you won't be able to avoid entirely. If your sickle mower had a place to mount both inner and outer swath boards (many do), you can fabricate up a bracket and inner swath board, and may not even need a rake. |

The 60, 66, and 100 manuals say to harvest oats with no screen installed. I don't have a ton of All-Crop experience and nobody has ever explained why this is the case. Did the newer 72 or 90 manuals actually have a recommended screen for oats? When I looked into Einkorn, it doesn't pop out of the hull during harvest like domesticated wheat does. I think swathing it first will help with losing the awns from what I remember? I don't think you're going to find Einkorn in any old seed cleaner manuals as far as screen sizes, and I don't know what other grain might be comparable. Possibly oats, but no screen for those that I am aware of. The wheat or large wheat screen might possibly be good starts... the grain itself would be smaller than modern wheat, but it'll have the hull on, so that will increase the size. You might be the first guy on the forum to try this. Thanks guys! I know I'm having fun with this project. My Wife-to-be has been baking with Einkorn and it's soooo good for our bodies, and we love the flavor. I'm hoping to learn from this, and may have the potential to go bigger if I learn and figure out more things. I do have a local mentor and will learn from him. Great guy. This is very neat, I’m looking forward to hearing how it goes. I’ve wanted to grow some einkorn for a couple years, I just haven’t found a decently priced seed source yet. Where did you get yours? |

| I have no help for you on the All Crop side but I am very interested in how it goes for you. We raise spelt every year for livestock feed, but it is another old world wheat variety like Einkorn that is supposed to be good for milling flour. Haven't done it yet, but I definitely want to. We also raise a good amount of Rye for cover crop and I would really like to mill that as well, but we don't usually let it get to harvest. My Uncle has an All Crop in the corner of the barn that he is gonna fix "someday", but until then the red combine makes short work of small grain adjustments. |

Yes! Video will come probably within 1 month, thanks for asking! Its been a VERY BUSY year for me. I got Married to the love of my life on July 25th, and have spent many months planning the wedding with her. I haven't been able to post videos lately with this taking priority, but I'm excited to get settled into our new home together and start life with her. MANY new great videos to come, I have 4 or 5 in mind and footage recorded for some others already. Einkorn! What's not to love? This ancient grain is really cool to work with. Whats even cooler? My Family all helped out with this Harvest project, from getting Grandpas 66 Big Bin out of the barn that hadn't ran in 8 years, to being there for harvest. We all had a BLAST enjoying the afternoon, and even better yet, my mom with a last minute decision was able to get grandpa out for the afternoon to enjoy it. He will be 92 years young on August 16th. He loved every minute and was "sure to tell us" all the tips on operating the all crop and the mechanics. We knew he would know! One of the highlights of the summer for me. Wanted to be sure to update you guys, I know some of you were interested in this project. . Looks good! I grew a patch of eincorn last year. This year I grew Turkey red wheat. There are a few eincorn dehulling videos on YouTube. They use a $20 "corona mill" off Amazon and a pair of rubber disks adhered to the Mill's grinding faces. The grain is rolled out of its hulls. Then it's like wheat processing from there. . |

Yes, that is his 66 combine and also D17. Was great to see both out in the field working. Had alot of family fun that day. You know John, we ended up just going with the last screen Grandpa had in it, when he took Oats off about 8 years ago. Lol At the time we got the combine out 3 days ago, we didn't see any other screens. But grandad says he has more somewhere, but I haven't seen them. I think it did a decent job on the Einkorn, I'm just guessing by what was left in the straw, that we got 90% or so thrashed. I'm sure someone with more experience could have done better though. . Wjohn, Eincorn has a hull that grips the grain like oats. So you need a second process to rub the hulls off. Then it's like wheat seed. Middle ages they ground it with the hulls on and the bread was dense peasant food. The hull fiber tends to puncture the yeast bubbles. The fancy wheat was sent to their local Lord to snack on. . |

Great pictures Don . So glad that your grandfather could see it working. Great memories you and your family are creating. I have watched the videos you have made of your grandfather. Keep making them !!!. If I could have a video of either of my grandfather's I would be on cloud nine.
