what do you have to take off to get the axle housing off to get ring and pinion out and transmission gears out

To remove both axle housings with the final drives, I would do it before splitting the transmission from the torque tube. But, you do it as you want. It requires removal of brakes on both sides, which requires removal of that dreaded lower brake shoe pin which is probably rusted in place. Once you get out that lower pin (which may take a cutting torch) and remove/unthread both brake rods you can now lift out the brake shoes. Now, you can remove 6 nuts on each side and pull out the axle housings. Then, go for the differential side bearings and roll the differential out the back and then disassemble the transmission.
