If it's a straight 1/4" thread it's either 20 TPI for coarse or 28 TPI for fine. If it's 1/4 pipe thread it's tapered and, if I remember right, 14 or 16 TPI(?)

Would like to answer your question with certainty, but I can’t tell for certain. I have 2 sets of them, one set has no holes, the other set is so rusty, crusty and eroded that its hard to tell. It looks more like 1/4-20, but seems like they would have made it fine thread instead since the holes are so shallow. I did get a 1/4-20 bolt to kinda sorta start in the best one of the threaded set of caps… I ‘think’ they’re coarse thread. Definitely not 1/4 pipe, the holes are too small even for 1/8 pipe…

Go to a hardware store and try different nuts on the bolt until you find one that works.

they are 1/4x20,   i would have thouhgt fine thread to get more threads.  i took a 1/4 x20 tap and ground it off flat     when its bottomed you will only get three threads.       i put a grade 8 bolt on the end of a slide hammer four came out decent    and two had to have a lot off beating around the edges and heat i,      will probley have to replace those caps because it made little bulges bad enought they probley wont lap back in
