I This is what I found when I removed the side inspection cover. The small broken cast part worries me most. I'll have to use my bore scope to try and find where it came from, any guesses? One nut is missing, and the threads are pulled on the bolt it came from. My service manual doesn't seem to show the broken pieces of a circular Shim, if that is what it is. I use the tractor without the PD but would be nice if it did work. I removed one woodruff key from the shaft and one I found lying at the bottom. All experienced opinions are very welcome! and thanks for your time. My books show the PD unit but do not show the brass collar, or anything associated with the PD shift mechanism. I need to identify the ring broken in two, where it goes and the brass collar part number, the shift fork part No. or what collars and forks are interchangeable. Tractor serial No. D152913   1961?  And thanks again for your time.

Shift transmission into neutral and the hand clutch into neutral and turn the assembly by hand to view things.

Been into that same situation a couple of years ago.  I had a terrible clatter, power director didn't feel right.  Took the inspection plate off and found some pieces.  Ended up having to replace the yoke on the power director as an ear broke off.  I'm not to far from you as I'm located in Sand Lake, MI.  Here is a picture of my carnage that I had to address.  PM if you want to talk more about this, I'll share my cell number.

Split the tractor and take the assembly out.  Someone here should have a used assembly with all the parts you need.  Also a good opportunity to clean the dirt and debris from between the clutch plates.  Put everything back together as indicated in the service manual and it will be as good as new.

Looks pretty dry. Somewhere in the past it must not have had any oil in that compartment ??  Takes 2 gallons.

Yes, you are right, it was dry, and it literally smoked the brass collar I'm told. Please help ID the two-piece round spacer/shim? This is all I could find after a good cleaning. Also, there is a missing nut from one of the brass collar bolts. I used a good bore scope and can't see the nut or the other missing piece of the flat ring. I cannot find broken spacer/shim in any parts book.  I have a shift fork and brass collar on the way.
