Seems back in '97ish Ford decided to save 2 cents per truck and NOT locktite 2 bolts. The bolts that hold connect the shift lever to the cable that goes to the tranny. Seems after awhile, they get loose. The warning signs are wonky shifting and won't-start-in-park. In my case it was the 'wonder where this T30 Torx bolt head came from' ?? Turns out it's the head from the right side bolt that has been sheared off from using the shift lever for the past 1/4 century.......
Going to be 'fun' getting the  'headless bolt' out of the hole, cause if you remove the left bolt, there's a spring under that plate that'll fall out.
This would be a 10 minute job IF I didn't have to crawl under the dash, bend arms into unnatural positions , try to see with bifocals and best of all ,tossed my back out big time.More 'fun', the left side has a fishing line attached that goes to the PRNDL on the dash !
I did manage to tighten the left bolt, shifts great, starts in park ! so I figure I've bought myself some time.

I had that on my 97 F150, then the 99 F250 started exhibiting same sloppy shift lever.
Red loc-tite since 2017 on the F250.

So this is a surprise to you?? Ford has been cutting corners and pinching pennies since the early 1900s

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

...and the other manufacturers haven't been?

Maybe that's why Ford was able to pay back all their government loans when the others didn't?

My latest shifting issue was in Carlin, Nevada a few weeks ago.

Hop in truck, start the engine, put on the belt, foot on brake, check the right left sides (I'm backed into the space, as is normal for trades vehicles)... look left, right, ahead,  Move shifter to DRIVE, take foot off the brake, apply a touch of throttle to pull out, and...

IT BACKS UP.  Shocked

Foot on brake! Hmm...  I'm not on an incline...
Release brake (doesn't roll back)... a light touch of throttle, and it backs up, bumps into the parking block.

Hmmm...

Neutral... revs free rolls forward a few inches... brakes... reverse... release... tries to back up (it's against the block again).

Park.
Hmmm...

Reverse... tries to back up...

Neutral... nothing

Forward... Tries to back up.

Park.  Key off.  Contemplate...

Restart... foot on, to Drive... release brake, and it goes forward.

Full-Authority Electronic transmission control is BAD MOJO.

GM has its own issues.  Just 'Started' replacing seeping Heater Core 2010 Impala.  Good Lord what a nightmare.

According to friends that still have book time guides, the replacement time for this heater core is EIGHT HOURS.  First and foremost(I Did Not and regret it) REMOVE Both Front Seats, next disassemble ENTIRE Dash, is actually better to Remove Steer Column as the MFR did NOT make allowance to remove dash around that.  Next up remove CARPET(again I REFUSED to and somewhat regret) then can access the minimal screws to remove access panels and discharge plenum of HVAC Box, or so I thought.

GM Engineers saved PENNIES, by installing the Discharge Plenum and the Heater Core retainer cover with Three instead of seven or eight screws, the Remaining retainer bosses were enlarged during plastic casting and used as Heat Mushroomed Retention Heads, that require using a Wood Chisel(Make certain is SHARP)to cut them away.  Is on No Way any way to add retainer screws to where these bosses were once hacked away.

To call this a royal PITA is one thing, to have put such a conflagration of crap on the public is worse value.

That little Black Button is one of TEN Heat Upset Buttons, most importantly the Engineers set these up in the most INACCESSIBLE positions, where would almost be easier to remove the Entire HVAC Box from the car to replace the core, other than retainer bolts thru firewall are blocked by heat blanket.  Dash Panel should have been Three Panels, not a Huge PITA Single unit, more cost savings by enganears.

My 1977 F100 used to jump out of park too. I actually got a good deal on it because it pinned the guy I bought it from against a fence when it tried to run him over, LOL
