920 rear axle bearings/bushings?

My 920 has a severe leak and sits canted towards the side with the external diff on the rear axle.  Lots of up and down play on that side, so that is where the lop sided issue is coming from along with the seal being trashed.  I am guessing this is a major tear down to get to this to replace it?  Never been into one of these rear ends so I have no idea what I am going to get into.  Am I better off to find a donor tractor and just swap the rear end out?  I know the axles were heavier duty on the diesels, not sure why as the only thing that gets beat up by the diesel is the BGB.

Axle tube, and shaft are longer on 920's. Guessing to give a wider stance as it's a heavier tractor.

Ok, that said, what am I getting into to fix the issue, I have to run the hydro a quart low as any fluid above bottom of the axle seal just pours out.  She is doing ok for mowing right now, but need to fix this once the grass slows down.

I wouldn't press your luck running it with hydro level low. If it's the seal leaking you will need to remove differential assembly on RH side to get at seal. Will need to remove grease zerk, and snap ring also. If the LH side is leaking you will also need to remove axle shaft. Make sure to put electrical tape over keyway, snap ring groove, and grease fitting threads before sliding new seal on. Hopefully you have at least a parts manual showing order of everything. Make sure to inspect axle tube for cracks.

I'll admit that while I AM an expert on the IH Cub Cadet hydrostatic transaxles of the '70's and early '80s (iron vintage), I am NO expert on the 920's driveline, but if you're getting up/down slop on the axle, then the seal leak is NOT the culprit, it's the result.

I don't know if that axle has bushings or bearings, but they WILL need to be addressed.

Now, if that doesn't work out, and you need something stronger, you can set it up with signficant strength by putting a 7.5" Auburn limited slip diff center in, with a pair of Dana 60 full floater housings, and you won't have any worries after that.

Lol Dave!  I am picking up a 7790 roller parts tractor tomorrow to swip its transmission out of.   I will probably part out the 7790, looks to have good hood, fender pan, tires(all turf).  Guy took the engine out of it.  Going to be a parts donor for mine and what I dont need I will sell or barter with.
