Getting ready to run some wheat with my N5 and I noticed while hooking up the header that the straw spreader and the sieve was rotating very slowly without the separator engaged, then I heard kind of a bang noise, separator will turn on with the switch fine, but did the same thing when I turned it on and off. Any ideas? Thanks!

Sooooo, you've been faithfully greasing the separator clutch bearing once a week right ???  Or do you even know what I'm talking about ??

Yes I certainly do know where it’s at, weekly? No I don’t run that many acres and don’t put that many hours on it. But it does indeed get greased, hell it only takes me a day to run the wheat I have. That’s why I run a junky old N5 to start with. So you thinking the bearing is failing?

Gotta ask !!! Many second and third owners have not a clue about that bearing. If the separator is creeping on its own, the only way is something wrong in that clutch area.

Try unhooking the hydraulic hose running to the rotary coupler on the separator clutch shaft. Start it up. Do not engage the separator clutch, see if separator turns then, or if oil spurts out of the hose

Clutch pins also could be so badly worn that they are causing a bind that won't let the clutch fully separate when disengaged

Ah the old split main clutch shaft issues. You have had excellent advice here - just an explanation. The reason to disconnect the supply hose is to eliminate the 2% possibility there is something wrong in the valve stack. IF no oil squirts out of the hose (thus meaning the clutch is doing what it is supposed to be doing) then you might as well get a book, follow step by step and repair the mechanical issues which could the aforementioned  pilot bearing, the floater pins, warped clutch or separator plates. The company even provided a ledge to lay the LH assembly on while you are in there fixing everything. :-)  Thank goodness for the evolution to the one piece main clutch shaft.
