Hi folks,

I'm starting a landscaping project and wanted to hear from others who’ve used tractors or similar equipment for this kind of work. We’re working on a mix of residential and commercial plots – mostly leveling ground, preparing soil, and laying out planting areas.

I’d love some advice on:

  • Which implements work best for grading and soil prep?

  • Any Allis Chalmers models particularly well-suited for landscaping tasks?

  • Tips for managing smaller areas where big machinery might not fit?

Appreciate any tips or shared experiences—always something to learn from seasoned hands!

Thanks in advance!

Rough or finish grading ?
For years I used a back blade on IH 460 Utility tractor along with rough grade with HD5G using bucket without teeth to smooth and level .
Later I uses a land plane on my New Holland 785 skid loader , or just bucket on skid loader to smooth small areas .
Using a Fiat Allis FD5 dozer now and finish with LX665 New Holland skid loader .
Depending on how large of area your doing depends on machine , what size truck you have to transport and how heavy of jobs you take on .
I started doing driveway rock and grading , then bought HD5G and started doing dirt moving and trucking , digging basements and backfill foundations .
Next I got certification for On Site Septic Systems - Design , Install , Soil Testing , Repair , and Inspections . So equipment changes as added Tractor Loader Backhoe, 2 1/2 yard 4 wheel drive loader , and other machines as needed .
But first 5 years was the IH 460 , HD5G , Tandem dump truck and low boy trailer to haul the HD5 - the 460 I could move behind pickup on 4 wheel trailer .
INSURANCE cost will dictate work also as what you can insure at right price , The GVW of truck govern costs and if you need a CDL license . Insurance if you need XCU coverage or extended liability , product liability , and the array of other coverages .
