I have a 1955 WD 45, I'm replacing the water pump and have the pump off the tractor, now trying to get the pulley off. Not sure what to do, there are two studs with nuts on both sides of the pulley housing, there is also a washer plus looks like some sort of keeper that fits in that channel. the two bolts / nuts are to adjust the pulley diameter if you dont have a generator... You dont need to remove them...

actually you already took the 4 fan bolts off the front.. the pulley is STUCK on the center shaft... just tap it around and it should come off... THen you have the HUB behind that...


not your tractor, but this looks similar... note the HUB on the shaft and the 4 fan bolts that have been removed.... in the background you can see another pump with the PULLEY still on the HUB.

Thanks steve for the reply, that really helps, I'll at some penetrating fluid to it and began to work it loose. Very was great too.

It has been a while since I have worked on one of these pumps, but this what I think I remember. The pully is a press fit on the shaft and it will not come off by using penetrating oil or tapping. Look up under the pully and you will see what is a snap ring in a grove. That is what holds the shaft in the housing. Work the snap ring out of the grove. Then you will need to take off the back plate and push the shaft and pully out the front. Then you will need to fit a piece of pipe over the bearing and against the under side of the pully. Then press the shaft out of the pully. Note how far the pully is pushed on the old shaft before removing. Sounds hard but not really. Time and a press.

Pulley is NOT press fit on shaft. Hub is. Some diesels are press pulley.

I just replaced the water pump on my 57 wd45, make sure you put good anti-seize on the hub and your great grand kids will thank you!!
Mine lucky slipped right off without trouble though…also while you have no water in it it might be a good idea to replace the belt.
Thanks Steve, I’ve been trying to figure out how to replace and tighten a WC belt…

I finally got the pulley off, I left it set for a couple of days with some oil. Came off with a few rubber mallet hits. Thanks...

Any one know if I can have the water pump serviced. It was linking through the little weep hole. I'm buying another pump, but I'd like to have the original one fixed.

Water pump rebuild kits used to be available, but I haven't seen one in years. Most, now, are foreign built replicas. I doubt they are even rebuilt.

If someone is rebuilding them I have a bunch of leaky ones I possibly would donate to a good cause….

Brand new China pumps are cheap and functional. If you can even buy a rebuild kit for the "original " look you will likely spend more and have the headache of pressing things apart and back together without busting something.
