I have never lived anywhere where oats were grown or where any crops were swathed before combining. Always neat to see different practices.

Nice video!

Although there were very few combines in our area, a lot of the grain combines, from when I was younger, used pickup heads, like the one in the video. The grain was cut with a swather and allowed to dry in the windrow, then combined. I rarely see that now.

I can remember Dad saying the oats would heat (and mold) if they didn't dry in the windrows. I'm assuming grains have to be thoroughly dry before combining with a direct cut head?

Swathing is common here.Using roundup as a dessicant then straight cutting is popular for the bigger operators but swathing is still the choice for us small guys.

I have never seen it done that way either. Seams there would be a lot of grain loss?
